Ahhh, April—that special time of year when our thoughts turn to spring, Opening Day in baseball and National Poetry Month in the U.S. So, how do you mark what is supposed to be “the cruelest month?” When you tell friends and family it is National Poetry Month, are your responses similar to this:

Next Tuesday is April Fool’s Day. (You’d think it would end March Madness- the State’s NCAA college basketball championship, but no, the final four is April 5th and the final game is April 7th.)

Think of a famous person or situation from history, imagine them/it updated to present-day, and write a poem based on what you imagine.



RANDOM READING TIP

Make a ritual out of reading poetry. If you can, set aside the same time every day — even if it is just the last ten minutes before bed, or your morning bus ride, or whatever — and dedicate that time to poetry. Read from your favorite chair, or make a Sunday afternoon date for yourself at a local café to read and sip something yummy.



RANDOM COLLABORATING TIP

Cut one of your poems up into words and phrases, place everything in a paper bag, and give the poem puzzle to a collaborator to piece together in a new way. (This can also be done through e-mail if you are collaborating with someone in a different area.)
