You’re almost there, and inspiration for your next to the last NaPoWriMo poem is at your fingertips! D.S. Apfelbaum recalls what William Carlos Williams once wrote, “It is difficult/ to get the news from poems,” but asks, “Who says you can’t get poems from the news?”
For this prompt, choose your favorite newspaper or online news provider. Jot down five to ten headlines that jump out at you and without reading the articles, select elements from each headline to create a new event about which your poem reports.
Alternately, let short-format sections inspire you. Write a poem in the form of an obituary, a personal ad, a classified ad, etc. (Bonus points if you can pull off a poem in the form of a crossword puzzle.) ![]()

My Day 29 poem: Evening Scene, Autumn
I may just manage to squeeze this one and the next one into the next 30 hours before April is finished here – but certainly one more is seeming almost manageable
Ok here goes. I borrowed a line from the Beatles
Hope it’s not too depressing.

Thank you for the salute Viv!! I am so very fascinated by what’s “out there”, to me, a reality overwhelmingly more mind boggling than any cult, superstition, or “ism” man can dream up in all his existence — just numbingly stupefying… and to think, in all of man’s wondering and searching over all the centuries and millenniums, relative to the fathomless vastness of it all — we essentially haven’t even begun yet! WOW!!

Here, in the land of The Barton Chronicle, The Irasburg Informer, and The Hardwick Gazette (all truly august weeklies, mostly featuring the farm reports and the police blotter), they pretty much just tilt their head and smile if you ask where you can get a copy of The Boston Globe or -God forbid- The Washington Post.
I really enjoyed this piece.

Enjoy….
Keep writing.
The front page news in my life right now is the loss of a favorite uncle, so here is an obituary of sorts.
http://kolokoli.blogspot.com/2010/04/to-my-uncle.html
Off prompt, but I wrote this rather early today
That being just now. Not the cheeriest, quite abstract, but I enjoyed writing it. A glimpse into my darkest facets.
In the Dark
Spires reach their spindly limbs
Attempting to grasp the sky
As my hands grope
That same space
The place of my memories
I dream in the daytime
Sometimes at night
Fabricating dreams.
I weave all my fears
Into a messy
Broken
Threadbare tapestry
Overflowing loose ends
Missed stitches
In threads the colours of
Missed opportunities
Powerlessness
Bitter thoughts.
I dream without thought
Floating down
Down
Down
A whisper of my real self
To rest on ocean sand
Loose, fleeting
Sifting through the cracks
Into the earth below
I am obviously worn out.
I did the prompt wrong but am offering it to you, anyway.

Funny!
This poems stemmed from a mis-reading of a headline. It was actually about baseball bats.
Controversy Over Aluminum Bats
Animal rights activists are fuming
like glowing metal. Imagine if you
asked for a date only to discover
your target was a robot. It’s the same
for the bats, the soda can carved likeness
hanging upside down in the eaves.
But the artist claims she is not culpable
for the flying mammals confusion. Irksome,
as sharp edges of wings may be,
many art enthusiasts find the birdlike pieces
magnetism for such metallic criticism pathetic
and environmentalists warn against the fallacy,
reminding others at least the stiff creatures
cannot morph into fog or wolves or vampires
and some cans are being recycled. Good for trees.
When asked why the artist crafted the aluminum
into bats she simply replied, “Don’t be so blind.”
