Lee Krasner’s Shoes

-	after a photo by Evelyn Hofer

Paint splatters the worn leather, each shoe
a small canvas bent around dark space
in the shape of a foot. The two soles press
into the stool’s seat, as it holds them up:
an abstract expression of everything it takes
to walk up to a rectangle of blinding white
and create a window into another world.

I'm a day late on this one. But it made me dig up a 12-year-old poetry journal with enough material to rewrite to last two national poetry months.

This is a poem AND a contest. :_0

I wove together several scraps from my freewriting, and I’m actually quite pleased with the result... although I may still tweak it a bit down the road.

~~~~~~~
Within
I want to know the skylark’s intricate song,
the complexity of clouds and spider webs,
the sap that sings through gray branches
teasing them into wakeful green
I want to remember all that goes on underground,
the diving roots and busy worms,
bulbs with their compact potential,
spores of mushroom quietly waiting.
I want to blur the boundary
between my skin and tree’s hide,
taste its apples of understanding
new in my mouth.
I want to vibrate with the honeybees
Breathe the space between cells
Be the white river, flowing,
Trust the knower within.
Star Maiden Of Gichigami
Angeliad of Surazeus
2010 04 26
http://open.salon.com/blog/surazeus
Laughing Hawk returns to small village
of wigwams by sparkling Lake Gichigami
carrying five rabbits he caught for supper
to rest by fire while White Lily will cook.
Looking for bright eyes of White Lily
Laughing Hawk walks to village edge
where everyone stands looking upward
at a white light glowing over a mountain.
Dancing Owl oldest wise elder of Ojibway
points to bright light and proclaims soft
one of you braves must go into mountains
and discover secret of this white light.
White Lily gives Laughing Hawk a new bag
with nuts and berries for his long journey
and Dancing Owl hands him a new staff
adorned with features he carved from oak.
Laughing Hawk walks into high mountains
and walks among pines that sing in wind
toward white light that shines so bright
casting eerie glow on a broad meadow.
Sparkles of rain fall from silver moon
gleaming on his open hands with eyes
that shine with dreams from dawn of time
so he gazes up into glow of pure light.
Laughing Hawk sees a young woman
with long hair gold as bright noon sun
and eyes that glitter blue as dawn sky
floating in a white gown under a cloud.
Star Maiden sings an enchanting spell
and reaches out her snow-white hand
as cold as ice to touch his forehead
then wraps arms around his warm skin.
I am Astara Magdalena from Arcadia
daughter of Mariya Mother of Angels
and I sailed in heaven on cherub wings
but I got lost and long for a new home.
Laughing Hawk gazes lost in blue eyes
as rose red lips kiss his ancient soul
and he floats in dream of swirling wind
feeling earth spinning slow in his heart.
Spark of light in deep black cold sea
flashes in big bang that flares forth
in streaks that swirl into shining stars
surrounded by spirits in glowing spheres.
First Soul swims toward Diamond Eye
spiraling spirit of love on Tree of Life
that opens four eyes at kiss of dawn
then a hawk falls from heaven to sleep.
Waking at gleam of dawn through trees
Laughing Hawk finds a small baby girl
in a basket who reaches out small hands
and grasps his finger gurgling with a smile.
Soft voice in a breeze whispers in his ear
I sailed this wide world on wings of light
and took your soul to create this child
so give her a name and treat her with care.
Laughing Hawk lifts child in tender arms
and cradles daughter of his spirit close
seeing eyes of his mother in her eyes
though her hair is gold like Star Maiden.
Walking back down to village of his clan
Laughing Hawk presents his new-born child
as they hug him exclaiming welcome back
for you were gone more than nine moons.
Laughing Hawk stares amazed at their eyes
explaining I met a woman with gold hair
who came down from stars on moon disk
floating on wings of light and silver cloud.
Star Maiden took me high among clouds
and showed me lands of our great world
which is shaped like a turtle in a lake
with mountains and valleys and rivers.
White Lily takes cute child from his arms
and suckles her with sweet mother milk
and sings fly little child among pine trees
and bring me ripe berries hiding a star.
Laughing Hawk watches little girl grow
skipping around him with shining eyes
sweet charming Star Maiden of Gichigami
who weaves our universe with gentle hands.
