That's interesting. I hadn't heard that reaction. I wonder if part of their objection might not stem from the fact that some chapbooks cost as much as a full-length paperback?

I love your approach to discussing becoming chapbook publishers. My one issue with chapbooks - and I have two out - is that non-poetry readers don't want to purchase them as much, they want the full length book. But, poets, love the chapbook.

Just an interesting issue.

Thanks, Beth! I was fine with the reading fee for this contest; it seemed fair to me, and it was a lot lower than most. I appreciated how you talked about it on your website and explained how it would be used, and I felt like I could send it off in good faith and it would be used with integrity. I sort of looked at it the way I would look at donating to a non-profit.

That having been said, and while I totally understand the need for small presses to charge a fee...reading fees do get very frustrating sometimes. They really start to add up, and I've become really careful about what I'm willing to pay to enter now. Several contests I entered around the same time as qarrsiluni's charged far higher fees, didn't bother to explain why or what they were going to be used for, never sent me a reply, a confirmation of receipt, or notification of the results, and one didn't even respond to my e-mail. After six months, I had go and find the results myself, which were buried on their website. It left me sort of cold; like, basically, I just funded the publication of someone else's book, and got nothing out of it.

I recognize the need for small presses to charge fees, but I hate feeling taken advantage of. When they just demand money, cash my check, and ignore me...that ticks me off. I start to feel like it's a scam. I don't know what the solution is, but I do feel like you handled the situation well at qarrtsiluni.

Kristen, I'm glad the contest felt well-run to you; thanks for encouraging poets to try next year. We tried hard! It underscores our "problem" with contests that we weren't able to publish the two runners-up, your own chapbook "The Goatfish Alphabet" and Chella Courington's "Paper Covers Rock" as well, because both certainly deserved it. How did you feel about the $10 reading fee? Publishing projects are supported by sales and fees, for better or worse -- if we could charge more we could publish more, but we don't want to turn off potential submitters. What do people think about reading fee prices? What's fair?

Thanks to everyone for this very supportive feedback, both on what we talked about in the interview and about qarrtsiluni in general - Dave and I appreciate it a lot! And thanks to Dana and the RWP staff for conducting, editing and running the interview in the first place. Hats off to you all for what you're doing here!

What a fantastically lucid, informative and enjoyable interview - and what an inspiration you all are! I'm right behind the vision of the future for small-scale publishing embodied by Qarrtsiluni, by Mutating the Signature and by much that features at ReadWritePoem.

Great, informative interview! I think that qarrtsiluni is one of the most innovative publications out there. They represent a wide range of voices, and have published some really great work that I think a lot of other publications wouldn't have taken a chance on. I'd highly recommend entering their next competition--qarrtsiluni's was very well run; great communication throughout, and it was clear that Beth and Dave were very concerned with integrity. And if you can, treat yourself and order "A Walk Through the Memory Palace"--it's very high quality--both the book itself and the content.
