“I believe that the best way for a poet to serve the art is to get on with writing the poems that he or she wants to write”, says Wendy Cope. “Good poetry could not be composed to order, she argued, adding that any poet could write about public events without holding an official title.”
Cope is (was) a candidate for the UK’s poet laureate, and has taken herself out of the running, saying the post should be abolished. Quite a fervor should ensue.
