back in business (and a belated read write prompt #8)
by Dana Guthrie Martin
Great news to report. Deb of Stoney Moss has agreed to head up Read Write Poem. We’ll have more details soon, but I wanted to get the news out there to the community. Everyone welcome Deb and thank her for taking over the project.
Oh, and in case anyone is looking for a prompt (albeit a late one) for this week: how about resolutions. It seems fitting for the start of a new year and the start of new leadership on Read Write Poem.
You might want to write a list of things you resolve to do this year, then take one of the items from the list and write a poem around that item. Or you might think of over-the-top and downright zany resolutions you could make, and turn that into a list poem. (Remember, it’s a poem, so you don’t have to write resolutions you will keep or even ones that are logical or believable. You have poetic license, after all.)
We’ll be back on schedule for the next Get Your Poem On post, so check back this Monday and leave a link to your post as well as giving …deb a shout out.

- planning for napowrimo in april, and you are invited!
February 2, 2010 | 6:12 pmHello, hello dear Read Write Poem community members! We are in the planning stages for NaPoWriMo. (What? Is that a groan I hear, or an excited exclamation?)
We are planning another prompt-every-day for those folks who love to write a daily poem in April (which is, as most of you know, National Poetry Month in the United States — although there is an international following of writing poetry every day in April, too, so it is not just about the States).
Anyway! This is a call for prompts because we want to run your ideas, one every day, in April. So here’s what to do:
- Prompts must be no more than 250 words, and we will take the first 30 that we receive.
- Include “NaPoWriMo Prompt” in the subject line of your email as well as your username (e.g., the name you use when you log in) so we can match you up with your prompt and give you the link love.
- Email your submission (in the body of the email — no attachments please) to prompts (at) readwritepoem (dot) org!
We’ll let you know when we’ve got the 30, but don’t delay because it takes a lot of time to format the posts and we want to be ready come April Fools’ Day. Woohoo!
- new senior contributors at read write poem
February 2, 2010 | 11:51 amWe are thrilled to announce that Ren Powell and Dave Jarecki are moving into the senior contributor role at Read Write Poem. Both have been writing feverishly for the site, as well as providing ideas for content and for the community as a whole. In short, they make this site a more lively, and better, place.
Ren and Dave will fill the roles vacated by Carolee Sherwood and Jill Crammond Wickham, who have moved into the manager role.
Everyone please thank Ren and Dave for their hard work and commitment to Read Write Poem.
- rounding out the virtual book tour of sarah j. sloat’s ‘in the voice of a minor saint’
January 31, 2010 | 1:53 pmOur last stop on the Virtual Book Tour of Sarah J. Sloat’s In the Voice of a Minor Saint is with Ren Powell. Find Ren’s review at More Babel.
Joseph Harker provided our first stop in December, and you can find David Moolten’s review at Edible Detritus. David’s was followed by Dave Jarecki’s. Dave’s review is at his blog. Find Jill Crammond Wickham’s at Jillypoet: Mom Trying to Write.
In case you missed the introduction, we are (virtually) hosting Sarah J. Sloat’s In the Voice of a Minor Saint. For complete tour information, such as how you can get your own copy of the collection or how you can get involved in future tours, read this post.
- make your own book: get off the computer and onto the paper
January 30, 2010 | 4:19 pmBeth Adams has posted her latest project at The Cassandra Pages. “A Handmade Book” may not explicate all the details of bookbinding, but Beth shows readers the “Secret Belgian Binding.” It’s a beautiful as well as inspiring post.
If you would like more detailed instructions, Google “secret Belgian bookbinding” and find sites such as this one. Or look for a local book arts class for hands-on instruction.
As Beth says, ” … it did me good to get away from the computer and feel my hands at work!”

Thanks, Cerwiden, for the prompt and the send-off into a new year.
I’ll say (a little) more later but look forward to seeing what poetry the new year brings us all.
Thanks …deb for taking over. I know it is not easy to run something like this. You can count on me to support you. I am very glad, it is not closing down. I will come up with something for this prompt. Better late than never.
thanks for keeping RWP alive! i’ll help any way i can.
Hey, that’s great! Thanks, …deb. I think there’s a real place for a site like this. I may not be the most sociable fellow in the world, but I do like a challenging prompt, i.e. a kick in the pants, from time to time. I also like the name of the site – the fact that *reading* is put first!
I am so excited to see all your voices here!
I love this site, too, which is why I decided I *had* to lend a hand. Here’s to poetry: reading and writing!
I’m so glad you’re continuing this! It’s well worth maintaining!
hooray! I am truly excited. Cerwiden thank you so much for starting up the site and Deb thanks for taking over. The random prompt generator gave me vertigo as a word which is how I felt when I first read the site was closing: emotional vertigo.
Oh here is my contribution. I know it is gross, just blame the random prompt generator.
stunned
I woke up feeling so happy and relieve that …deb has decided to run the joint. Thank you, …deb. You will be brilliant in this role.

Thanks for the prompt and happy new year! Here’s my
New Year’s Resolution Haiku.
And thanks again for continuing this, Deb.
This is good news to hear!
And here I was thinking, as I loaded the site, if no one had taken it on yet, I would volunteer. I’m not done with this project yet!
Deb, let me know if you need a hand.
I *love* and appreciate the enthusiasm…
…links to “resolution” poems – or anything you want to write about – actually get posted next Monday, when the “Get Your Poem On” post is up. But heck. It’s a party. Just come back Monday and repost then as well, Roberta and Mad Kane.
Ah, shucks. My basic goal is to not muck up what has already been started…and keep it it going…in whatever form it takes.
Thanks …deb, and best of luck.
And a belated thanks to Cerwiden for starting this in the first place. It takes courage to know your limits.
I knew there was a reason (other than stubbornness) that I didn’t take down the link from my page…
Yay!
Thanks to you both!

Welcome, Deb!
I’m so happy you are able to manage the site, deb! Now it can keep unfolding and evolving.
I’m looking forward to reading all the great poems, and geting to know all the poets involved here.
The only resolution I have for now is to come up with a cool sign-off catch phrase!
Hey, Deb, good on you! See you here…….
Thanks Deb for taking over, I had just decided to participate in 2008 when I saw it was gone….I did a submission via the random prompts I would like to share…my prompt was confessions! Hope you enjoy.
I’m so glad you are continuing…I just found the blog and was having fun with it.
